When it comes to a high end gaming laptop the immediate brands that pop up into our head are Razer, Lenovo, Dell, Asus, Acer and sometimes HP. Immediate facts we look in here are the GPU and RAM. Every major PC maker has an entry level gaming PC at probably 900$. The Dell G5 15 5590 and Lenovo Legion y545 are two of our favorites mostly because they deliver good performance for the money, but also for their designs since neither necessarily looks like a “gaming” laptop. Benchmark tests for Lenovo Legion Y545 vs Dell G5 15

In benchmark tests such as PCMark 8 and PCMark 10 the legion y545 performed relatively better than acer nitro 5, acer helios and the dell g5. But it should be noted that the configuration was different with both the laptops. Lenovo had the i7-9th gen whilst Dell used i5-9th gen and VRAM of 6 GB and 4 GB respectively. It was the same in the cinebench test for productivity, storage and media tests. In photoshop tests however the Dell G5 was ahead of the legion. In graphics tests such as 3DMark the legion was still ahead although it fell short for Dell G7. When it comes to real world gaming tests such as Far cry 5 and Rise of tomb raider the legion passes the 60 fps without any difficulty in moderate and higher settings.

But the same cannot be said for the Dell, it falls short at approximately 52 fps. However in battery rundown tests the Dell G5 out-performed the Legion. Also Dell wins in the thermal testings as well, the legion starts heating up at intensive usage.

Comparison and downsides

Needless to say both the products are customizable. Additionally the dell G5 has a thunderbolt 3 port and an RGB keyboard and SD card reader, which the legion doesn’t. Oh yeah we forgot to mention that both the laptops have the majority of its ports at the back unlike its previous versions. But there are few downsides to the Lenovo legion. The webcam is located ridiculously at the bottom of the screen and as you can imagine that sounds awfully wrong. Also the speakers are located at the back too and don’t deliver much noise as much as when they are upfront. To top it off at high performance situations it emits a large amount of heat.

Therefore if your intention is to run some high processing power demanding apps, or play battlefield 1 at the highest possible settings you are gonna encounter this issue. The solution here would be a firmware update or something similar by Lenovo. At this level of gaming laptop you’re paying mainly for the components rather than extra features. Based on current pricing, you’ll get a better deal on the Lenovo Legion Y545.

However, the build quality of the Dell G5 15 5590 seems better and the design looks a little less like a gaming laptop, if that matters to you. Also, Dell offers a few more extras like an SD card reader, Thunderbolt 3 and options to add an RGB LED keyboard and fingerprint reader. Benchmark wise the legion is ahead of G5.Therefore what we can conclude here is that Lenovo legion would be the better choice. But heat emission is a major issue. Fix that and Lenovo got a winner. On the other hand the G5 comes with several handy options. Both of these have a considerable battery power, and the stuff necessary for a good gaming experience.
